Can you add insulation to a house that's already built?
The short answer: Retrofit insulation means adding insulation to the attic or outside walls of a house that's already built. In Windsor it's usually the fix for hot upstairs rooms, cold floors and a power bill that won't settle down. A well-insulated attic with the ceiling sealed against air leaks slows heat moving in and out, and that can mean considerable energy savings.
Most people who call me have a room that's always hot, a floor that's always cold, or an attic they've never looked in. The price comes down to how much of the house we're doing, whether that's the attic, the walls or both. It also depends on how many gaps need sealing and whether old or damaged material needs insulation removal before anything new goes in. The schedule turns on the same things, plus any repairs that have to come first and whether the job needs a permit, which we apply for when it does. After I've looked at the house, your written estimate puts the order of work and the price on paper.
How do you know your house needs more insulation?
Rooms that stay hot upstairs
If the upstairs or the room over the garage always runs warmer than the rest of the house, heat is usually coming down through a ceiling with too little insulation above it. Every summer you wait, the air conditioning works harder to cool that room, and the power bill shows it.
Cold floors and drafty rooms
Cold floors and drafts in winter usually mean air is slipping through gaps in the house, not just that the insulation is thin. If you add insulation without closing those gaps first, you keep paying for heat that leaks right back out.
What you see in the attic
Open the hatch with a flashlight. If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, matted or stained insulation, or droppings, the attic needs attention. Old material that's been wet or nested in has to be dealt with before anything new goes over it, and the longer you leave it, the bigger the cleanup when you do get to it.
How we do retrofit insulation
I start by looking at the attic, the walls and the eaves, because a house that's already built can only take what each of those spaces allows, and some attics have problems that need fixing first. Next comes air sealing, which means closing the gaps around light fixtures, pipes, wires and the attic hatch. Insulation laid over a draft just has air pushed through it. Then we set baffles at the eaves to keep a channel open from the vents, so the attic keeps breathing and the insulation stays put instead of spilling into the eaves. Last, we lay blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, at an even depth all the way out to the top edge of the outside walls, because the edges are where a lot of attics end up thin.
If your attic is close to bare, the job is really attic insulation from the ceiling up. Where the space or the ductwork calls for it, we use spray foam insulation instead of loose fill.
Air sealing and a loose-fill top-up
This suits most attics that already have some insulation and plenty of gaps, because it stops the drafts and builds up the depth for less money than foam. It's what I usually recommend unless the ductwork runs through the attic.
Spray foam where the ducts run
This suits houses with ductwork in the attic, because foam seals the air and insulates in one layer, so the ducts end up inside the insulated space. It costs more, so I only point you this way when the ducts make it worth it.
What happens when you call about retrofit insulation in Windsor?
Here's how a retrofit job goes from your first call to a finished attic, and who you'll deal with at each step. I'd rather explain your house to you before anyone quotes you a number.
- Step 01
Call or send a request
Call (707) 687-4455 or use the form, and we'll set up a time for me to come out. It helps to know your home's age and anything you've noticed about the attic wiring, roof leaks or bath fans.
- Step 02
Walk the house with me
I go through the attic, walls and eaves with you and explain what has to be fixed first, so nothing gets covered up that shouldn't be. You then get a written estimate that lays out the work in order and what it costs, so the price isn't a guess.
- Step 03
Our crew does the work
Our install crew does the job with a lead installer on site, inside Windsor's construction hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Sunday work needs the Building Official's express approval, so most jobs run Monday through Saturday.
- Step 04
Look over the finished attic
Before the crew leaves, they clean up and show you the sealed gaps, the baffles at the eaves and the even depth out to the edges. Satisfaction guaranteed.
How retrofit insulation jobs get permitted in Windsor
In Windsor, the Town of Windsor Building Division enforces the state building code, and building permits are applied for online on eTRAKiT. The permit application asks for the contractor's Town of Windsor business license number, state license number and license class, so the contractor's paperwork has to be in order before anything gets filed. Whether your retrofit needs a permit is something I'll go over with you at the estimate. When it does, we take care of the application and set up the inspections.
We're based in Windsor and work across Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Petaluma and the other cities around it. In a lot of the attics we open, nobody has touched the insulation in years. It's usually settled thin at the edges, with the eave vents half covered, so we sort out the eaves and the gaps before we add any depth.

The owner walks your house
I come out myself to look at the job and write the estimate, and I explain what I find before I price anything. A retrofit done in the wrong order wastes money, so you'll know why each step comes where it does.
Working Windsor attics since 2017
We started in 2017 and have kept the business small on purpose, with nine years of attics and crawl spaces around Windsor behind us. The person who looks at your house is the same person who puts the plan together.
Licensed and insured for insulation
We're licensed and insured. California's licensing board has a separate class for contractors who install insulation for heat or sound control, so insulation is a licensed trade of its own here.
On a retrofit, getting the order right matters most. Ask for your estimate, and have your home's age and anything you know about the attic wiring, roof or bath fans ready.
Retrofit insulation questions from Windsor homeowners
How much does attic insulation cost in the Santa Rosa area?
Attic insulation in the Santa Rosa area usually costs about $1,700 to $5,600 per job. That's the going rate for attic work around here, not our price. Where your job lands depends on the attic's size, how much sealing it needs and whether anything has to be fixed or removed first. Your written estimate gives you your own figure.
What needs fixing in the attic before adding insulation?
One federal energy guide says to fix a few things before the attic gets sealed and insulated: active knob and tube wiring, vermiculite insulation, bathroom fans that vent into the attic and a leaking roof. Plan time and money for those fixes, because new insulation over them only hides the problem. I look for each one at the estimate and tell you what has to happen first.
How do I insulate walls without tearing them open?
Usually you can, with a common method called drill and fill. We drill small holes near the top of each wall cavity and fill the space with blown-in insulation. A federal building guide calls it somewhat uninvasive, and the holes can go on the inside or the outside of the wall. I'll look at your walls to see which side makes more sense.
Does adding attic insulation in Windsor need a permit?
It can, because state energy rules for attic insulation and air sealing apply when the ceiling over a heated or cooled room is altered, and adding or replacing attic insulation may count as altering it. That means a retrofit can bring those state requirements into play. We check this for your house at the estimate, as described above.
Is insulating an older house in Windsor any different?
It can be, because federal building guidance says to be aware of lead safety rules in homes built before 1980 when wall work disturbs the exterior walls. If your house is that age, tell us when you call, and ask how we'd handle it at the estimate.
What causes upstairs rooms to stay hot in Windsor?
Upstairs rooms usually stay hot because most California houses have vented attics that run hotter than the outside air on hot days. With little or no insulation on the attic floor, that heat comes straight through the ceiling. Sealing the ceiling gaps and adding insulation slows it down, and that's the heart of a retrofit.
Insulation services that go with a retrofit
Spray foam insulation
If your ducts run through a hot attic or you have tight spots loose fill can't reach, spray foam seals air and insulates in a single layer.
Attic insulation
When the attic has almost nothing up there, or the old material has to come out first, a full attic job starts from the ceiling and builds up.
